- [Jonathan] Hi, this is Jonathan Gitlin from Ars Technica, and we're here with the most interesting design and engineering on display at this year's LA Auto Show. BMW's Hybrid i8 is one of my favorite cars of the last few years, proving you can have fun and get good gas mileage at the same time. Now there's a Roadster version on its way. Infiniti's new QX50 SUV marks the first appearance of the company's very clever variable compression ratio engine. It's one of the biggest advances to the internal combustion engine in decades. Mercedes-AMG's Project ONE is the closest we've ever come to a road-legal Formula One car. It uses the same engine and high bridge system that gave Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg the last four World Driver's Championships in F1. Backup cameras are a ubiquitous feature in new cars, but Buick has gone one better and put it in the rear view mirror. The result: You get a much wider field of view with smaller blind spots than a normal mirror. This is Alfa Romeo's Stelvio Quadrifoglio SUV. It's now the fastest SUV around the legendary Nürburgring Track in Germany. The Acura NSX is another clever hybrid sports car, with not one, but three electric motors: one for each front wheel, and the third working together with the twin turbo V6 at the rear. The version of this hybrid system is gonna be used on other new hybrid Acuras. Volvo continues to delight us with its Scandinavian design, and the new XC40, its latest compact SUV, is full of quirky details. Lexus made its name with gizmo-packed sedans, but these days it's all about the SUV. The RX 350L is its latest. Three rows of luxury, and there's a hybrid version coming soon. Jaguar's first long range electric car, the I-Pace, is due here in 2018, and there's gonna be a one-make race series supporting next season's Formula E Championship. I wonder if they're gonna have a car for journalists to drive. Genesis has shown us that Korean companies can make luxury cars, like the G80 Sport you see here. It's unusual to even see Tesla at an auto show, so it was a big surprise to find the company here with its new Model 3 electric vehicle, perhaps the most hotly-anticipated car of the century? Subaru chose LA to debut its new Ascent, a three row crossover. Apparently it has 19 cup holders, although we ran out of time trying to find them all. It might look like a 1960's Land Rover, but the Bollinger B1 was designed in New York and is 100% electric. You can get it with either a 60 or 100 kilowatt hour battery pack. 2017 didn't give us the most mind-blowing LA Auto Show. I think the proximity to CES and then Detroit in a few weeks is having an effect. But as you'll have seen, there was still quite a bit of interesting design and engineering on display.
